Cancers are named for the area in which they start and the type of cell in which they are made, even if they spread to other areas of the body. For example, a cancer that begins in the lungs and spreads to the liver is still called lung cancer. There are several clinical terms used for some common types of cancer:
– Carcinoma is a cancer that begins on the skin or tissues that hold other organs.

Cancer can start almost anywhere in the human body, which is made up of trillions of cells. Normally, human cells grow and divide to form new cells the way the body needs them. As cells age or become damaged, they die, and new cells take their place.
But when cancer develops, this regular process breaks down. As cells become more and more abnormal, old or damaged cells survive when they need to die, and new cells form when they are not needed. These extra cells can divide without stopping and form growths called tumors.
Many cancers form solid tumors, which are mass of tissue. Blood cancers, such as leukemias, usually do not form solid tumors.
Cancerous tumors are malignant, meaning they can spread or invade nearby tissues. In October, as these tumors grow, some cancer cells may break away and travel through the blood or lymphatic system to distant locations in the body, creating new tumors away from the original tumor.
Unlike malignant tumors, benign tumors do not spread or invade nearby tissues. However, benign tumors can sometimes be quite large.
